I was alerted to the released report by The Public Accounts Committee referred to in Personnel Today's on the DVLAs chronic sickess problems and it would seem that the headline is just as relevant here. It doesn't make pretty reading but nonetheless given that it's in the public domain I evaluate its worth some compose to perhaps highlight the 'reality' that we find on the front-line away from all the glossy rubbish that seems to dominate in HR............. Sticking with the news from the last few days regarding Northern Rock (see last two blog entries) and what is now turning out to be more of a breaking crisis there are some interesting questions around leadership. Before I go on for those that are interested there was an excellent appraisal of the technical issues surrounding the 'bail-out' (which saves me doing it!) in yesterday's Financial Times - '. In trying to bring home the bacon a drama and avoid a crisis the collective leadership of the Bank. FSA and the Treasury seems only to undergo succeeded in doing the opposite in what can only be described in a Monty Python (No bail -out no bail-out - oh alright then!) and Dad's Army (Don't dread!) fashion. Unintended consequences be......... Why? 1. The opportunity to pro-actively bring home the bacon an orderly takeover to avoid any sense of risk over saver's deposits was missed. Northern Rock was known to be struggling for quite some time. The Bank of England's role should have been to oversee an orderly (quiet sealed sell perhaps) for Northern Rock's assets even allowing for the uncertainty of determine and the highest bid should have won (and may comfort do now) change surface if it was just a fiver. 2. The involvement of the Treasury is a little more sinister in that it is politically motivated. Political leadership is not required in a banking air. There are only three reasons for the Treasury's heavy involvement:a) trying to manage the potential assay to personal political reputation (now affect to unintended consequence aka the fallout from hold back freakery)b) involvement to act political advantage of the drama (not for the first measure and certainly backfired). Experience of organisations shows very similar events as above. And the danger is that it descends into 'cover-arse PR' and 'denial' rather than any real insight into failings. For example employee surveys quite often show certain leadership to be in denial. People management evaluations tend to show a number of HR functions in denial. To be honest this episode has already proven to be yet another sorry tale of poor leadership that is repeated day after day in organisations. I often wonder just how effective any leadership coaching mentoring and development is if it does not involve dilemma-type problem solving and evaluation (desire those in the 's courses) rather than the more common process individually-focused nature which I believe has little force or determine in terms of overall organisational leadership.
