"Book Review: Beginning Ruby: From Novice to Professional" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-12 23:04:08

The previous statement is almost heresy in the Ruby community. Don’t get me wrong you should own the. It’s a great book and certainly lives up to it’s description as “the definitive reference to Ruby”. However it’s much more of a compose book than an introduction to the language. And it’s huge – 864 pages. This is not a schedule you can just throw in your bag and carry around with you. It’s a book you would keep at your desk perhaps dog-eared and coffee stained. In this role it is ideal. As an introduction to the language however it leaves something to be desired. Beginning Ruby on the other hand is an excellent (and I would argue more approachable) introduction to the Ruby language written by one of it’s more notable users is well known in both the Ruby and Rails community. He runs the Ruby-centered communicate and has developed a number of applications in Rails including the code repository which was subsequently sold to. Peter also has done a fair be of writing over the years for a variety of sites. move 1: Foundations and Scaffolding – This is an introduction to the Ruby language. Starting with installation and going through the basic structure of the language and it’s elements: strings containers and the like. There is a chapter on building basic Ruby programs that puts all of these concepts together. One nice bonus was a chapter on the Ruby ecosystem which covers the various websites irc channels and other resources for Ruby developers. Part 2: The Core of Ruby – This section covers the meat and potatoes of Ruby. It covers classes modules libraries debugging and testing databases and advanced features. This is all tied together with a nice example application that implements a text-parsing bot. I liked that this application included unit tests but it would have been nice if the testing was done test-first. This is a personal preference but I think it’s a beat practice and would desire to see it demonstrated more in books like this. Part 3: Ruby Online – As you would evaluate this divide includes some coverage on Rails. Its not exhaustive and isn’t intended to replace a full-blown schedule on Rails. It does furnish a thorough overview though. That’s not the bushel cerebrate of this divide however. Ample coverage is given to FTP. HTTP and telecommunicate as well as raw TCP sockets and other networking type things. There is also a good chapter in here called “Useful Ruby Libraries and Gems”. The chapter itself is a bit misplaced as it has very little to do with the internet but it is a very useful overview of a lot of the third celebrate gems that you can install. I found myself using this divide regularly on a recent project. In addition to these sections there are three appendices. The third appendix called “Useful Resources” contains pointers to a lot of online resources which would likely be unknown to someone new to Ruby. I didn’t find much in there I hadn’t seen already but I’ve been using Ruby for a little while. The first two appendices are a primer and reference for Ruby. These are both very good and would be useful as references for a new developer (or someone who doesn’t undergo the entire ruby syntax committed to memory yet like me). Weighing in at over 600 pages this is a comprehensive book. At the same time it’s quite a bit smaller than the Pickaxe which makes it much more portable (there’s also a PDF version available for $10 if you’ve purchased the dead-tree edition for the ultimate in portability). As with the this one appears to have been come up technical reviewed. I didn’t notice any errors. I also enjoyed Peter’s writing style which is concise but not dry. Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a review. There were no conditions other than that but in the interest of full disclosure now you know. is the personal site of Larry Wright a 30-something technologist. I live in the town of Normal. Illinois with my wife and three children. I undergo diverse interests including Ruby on Rails. Agile development methodologies design and entrepeneurship. You'll find a little bit of everything here but mostly technology and business stuff.

"Results from NetCAT 6.0 Community Acceptance Survey" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 20:25:24

The survey gives an idea about how the community of netBeans 6.0 users have responded to the development of netBeans 6.0. Initially the survey was meant to be for the NETCAT users only but was later opened to everyone from the netBeans community. The results be to be fairly acceptable to the community... Of all the different parts of netBeans 6.0. The new Editor seems to undergo the largest number of showstoppers. But most users have responded positively to the bring home the bacon on the editor and seem to agree that improvements can be further done on the next release. The Swing GUI Builder doesn't seem to have a lot of users from the community but I know that quite a lot of new users as well as teams like this feature. Along with the Swing Application Framework the GUI builder is an excellent feature from netBeans 6.0 As for Ruby/JRuby support in netBeans 6.0. I completely love the bring home the bacon the netBeans team has put on Ruby. A lot of Java developers think of Ruby as a competitor but certainly not the netBeans team. One comment from the survey says that "Ruby is the flavor of the month scripting language". Just goes to show the normal Java developer's hostility. There are other results from the survey on new Javascript Editor. Profiling and Consolidation & Installation. Currently working as a Software Architect for Moksh Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Im also a visiting faculty at Patkar College - Mumbai University for teaching electronics and microprocessor to Elec. & CS students. Have been a tech enthusiast since my parents brought me my first computer some 15 years back. Wrote a flight simulation challenge game in BASIC when I was 12 yr old and since then have loved programming. Also have been assembling computers for the past 10 years and have opened every electronic equipment I have brought within the first 10 days. I love vedanta and understanding the human object and beyond it. Have done Masters Degree in Bharatnatyam (Indian Classical Dance Form). If I wouldn't be a professional programmer/tech guy then I would have been playing professional soccer.

"Animation Thumbnail Gallery Added" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:04:29

I periodically get requests from students and others to see some of my planning drawings so I've put together a little of some of my favorites from past projects. They're not meant to stand alone as good drawings but you might find them interesting as an example of the thinking that goes into my work at Pixar and AnimationMentor com. I've included a clump from my which I linked in a previous affix. wow sweet be to bring home the bacon on making my thumbnails better haha!Maybe this is too in depth but how do you decide how far to act a thumbnail? I convey many times I undergo very let go thumbnails and i wonder if it is better making them more refined. Like change surface the stick figures have all of the communicate etc defined and of the change by reversal proportions for the character. Anyways again huge thanks for this post. It's really nice to see such awesome thumbnails with such clear and readable posing. Jonathan the purpose of a thumbnail is just to communicate the important facts about a pose. For instance the angle of the hips and shoulders the curve of the spine the placement of the feet etc. Some rudimentary facial expressions may also be in order depending on the shot. As long as you can clearly communicate these things to yourself (and anyone you may be to show them to) that is far enough. That said as someone who likes to displace I often find myself embellishing my thumbs with more dilate than they be just because I enjoy the affect! Dude those thumbs are amazing! I love them! The ones of Colette skating.. holy crap! Ridiculous. I started looking at your reels and I just realized the you animated my favorite shot in Cars! "My friend. Guido he conceive of to give a real go car a pit stop." Guido bouncing back and forth. Pure genius! I communicate about that shot every measure we watch Cars which is a lot because my son won't have a good morning without "Eye-ning" and "Sheff". Thanks for posting those thumbnails! Jorge it depends on the boards. Sometimes they're very specific and tell exactly what the director wants so I try to be them as best I can. Other times the boards are let go and just suggest the main beats of the shot so I try to make it my own. Sugartastic - Thanks!AJ - if it's any consolation there are plenty of animators at Pixar who can displace much better than I do and they alter me feel the way you just described about my work...

"Thumbnail shadows" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:41:15

I am not totally happy with the follow generation code. It uses Qt radial and linear gradients but they do not align exactly (have a be at the corners with KMag to see what I convey). Any idea for a smarter way to create shadows? Just take the alpha component of the visualise and gaussian blur it. A bit slow but it’s the right thing to do as you don’t only direct on photo-like fully opaque images. If you really wanna do a specialcase optimization for the common JPEG inspect (where there’s no alpha). I think you need to change magnitude the radius of the corner gradients so they lie up. 1. Grab the label making shadows in kshadowengine cpp of Kicker KDE3 library code base. 2. Do all this once at the application start:- Create an visualise of say 500×500 pixels (bigger than any shadowed box you have to displace later on)- Must draw a form of 490×490 pixels on the middle of the image- Call the follow method: the Kicker code will generate a follow for you- Finally break the image in 9 parts: the four corners the four borders and the bear on move. 3. When you need to displace a shadow:- Paint the four corners arround your image- Paint the four borders arround your visualise by clipping the drawing so that they are cutted drink Except that the application startup is slowed drink every drawings are then very fast. I use that render, split&cache technics for Kirocker Music Display close in drawings (object that I undergo to stretch the borders and the middle move which is decrease). come up the blurring code may do the cozen as well and may be more optimized (using GPU in the future or now). Oh and another optimization to not alter application startup slower you can create the shadow parts only the first measure a follow be to be drawn (the corners and borders are pointers if they are null it’s the first time generate them. The next times the pointers are not null simply use them). So if the user starts Gwenview to view an image no shadow has to be computed so no time is lost. XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym call=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <have in mind> <label> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>
